CHRIST (Deemed to be University) emerged from the educational vision of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, a 19th-century educationist and social reformer in South India. The university is administered by the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first Catholic indigenous congregation, founded by St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara in 1831. Established as Christ College in 1969, the institution has grown significantly, earning a reputation for academic excellence and expanding its presence across India.

In 1998, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was accredited by NAAC, and in 2004, it was granted autonomy by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Recognized as an Institution with Potential for Excellence in 2006, it was declared a ‘Deemed to be University’ by the Ministry of Education in 2008. The Pune Lavasa Campus, inaugurated on July 20th, 2014, has quickly become a prominent center for higher education.
